Measuring for Blinds and Shutters

Measuring for blinds and shutters may seem relatively easy, but the process can be a little more complex. Handy people will often do some preliminary measuring and come into the store with some data. At Blind Ambition, we are glad to see this. It can help us understand a client’s needs a little bit better and help us explain which window coverings may be the best fit for their space.

But accurate measurements are vital for perfectly fitting custom window coverings. Familiarity with the process can be very enlightening, so we encourage all our clients to understand the basics.

How to Measure a Window Frame

Blinds and shutters can be mounted inside window frames or extend past them. To get started, measure the frame in three spots for width: at the top, middle, and bottom of the window. Then, measure the height at the middle, left, and right sides. Finally, measure the window’s depth. Write these numbers down to the closest ⅛” and never round them down because the materials might not provide enough coverage.

For the width, use the smallest measurement. That way, the blinds should easily clear the sides. The final height measurement is different; use the largest one instead.

What to Know About Inside and Outside Mounts

Blinds and shutters can be mounted inside or outside of window frames. Inside mounts get installed within the window; outside mounts cover the structure and can attach to the surrounding wall. Outside brackets can also be attached inside frames, but only when there’s enough depth to accommodate them without an obstruction. Bear in mind that external mounts need sturdy wall surfaces, making them good options for doors.

The initial measurements taken can be used as is for inside mounts. But with outside mounts, add 3” to the width and height. That will provide the needed space for any attachments. Many homeowners extend this out even further, depending on their preferences. A wide, outside-mounted blind or shutter can even be large enough to cover two windows.

Common Measuring Mistakes

It is common for homeowners to make mistakes when measuring for blinds and shutters. When measuring mistakes happen, this can leave blinds, shades, shutters, or other window coverings with gaps or crooked appearances. Here is what to avoid:

  • Only measuring the old window coverings: That can provide extra information, but they could be the wrong size. Measure the window opening instead.
  • Not measuring all the windows: Even if all the nearby windows look the same, their sizes might differ slightly. Measure them each individually and note which one is which in your measuring.
  • Using the wrong measuring tool: Use a steel measuring tape with ⅛” markings for the most accuracy. But don’t bend your measuring tool while working because that will throw things off.
  • Mixing up the numbers: The letters written down should be as accurate as those numbers. Include abbreviations like W, H, and D, and keep them in the same order across all your measurements to limit confusion.
